Objectives
Language Objectives:
-
- To build and expand students’ vocabulary related to American Cuisine through contextualized and interactive activities.
- To strengthen students’ listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills by engaging them in a variety of integrated language-learning activities.
Cultural objectives:
- Introduce students to different Cuisine from around the world
- Foster Cultural growth, cultural respect and awareness
Social Objectives:
- Students will practice cooperation and respectful communication by working with classmates during food-related activities, games, and role-play about American cuisine.
- Students will develop cultural awareness and social interaction skills by sharing ideas, taking turns, and discussing American foods and traditions in a supportive classroom environment.

Preparation
- Coordinate with the 2nd English teacher to schedule and align the activities with classroom goals.
- Prepare all necessary materials, including printed worksheets, art supplies (paper, crayons, markers) for the Hamburger worksheet, and role play cards.
- Ensure access to a whiteboard or projector to display visual aids and support instruction.
- Modify and differentiate instructions as needed to support students with varying language proficiency and learning needs
Activities
The activities focus on teaching students about American cuisine, with an emphasis on popular foods such as hamburgers and hot dogs, through engaging, hands-on learning. Students participate in interactive activities designed to explore the cultural significance of these foods while building vocabulary and language skills in a meaningful and age-appropriate way.
Activity 1 : Build a burger cut and paste worksheet

Activity 2: Color and label American Food worksheet
- P2. Students will use sentence stems discussing favorite types of food in English

Structure of the Lesson
The lesson is structured within a 45-minute class period to allow students to complete both the worksheet and the role-play activity. The first portion of the lesson (approximately 20 minutes) is dedicated to guided instruction and a worksheet focused on vocabulary related to American cuisine, specifically traditional American cuisine. The remaining time (approximately 25 minutes) is used for an interactive role-play activity in which students practice an everyday exchange, such as ordering a hamburger, to apply new vocabulary and develop speaking and listening skills in a real-life context. Each student will have access to sentence stems for additional language support.
Competencies Worked on
The activities target the following levels:
- A1-A2 (Basic User):
- Understanding frequent American vocabulary words regarding cuisine (e.g., American Food, Traditions).
- Engaging in simple exchanges and describing aspects of American Food.
Evaluation Criteria (2nd Grade ESL)
- Food Vocabulary
Students can recognize and use new words about American food, such as hamburger and hot dog, during activities and worksheets.
- Listening and Speaking
Students listen to short videos and instructions and can answer simple questions or repeat words and phrases in English.
- Reading and Writing
Students complete worksheets by matching, coloring, or writing simple words related to American cuisine.
- Participation
Students take part in class activities, including movement games and role-play, and follow directions.
- Role-Play Use
Students use simple English words or sentences when pretending to order food, such as “I want a hamburger.”
- Movement and Learning
Students join in physical activities that help them remember new words and stay engaged.
- Working with Others
Students share, take turns, and work kindly with classmates during group activities.
